Hello, I am Robin from Estonia, one of the volunteers in VulcanicaMente's Euro Bike Tour ESC project. Before setting off on our trip Oct. 4, we spent a week preparing fully. Read on to see what the day-to-day planning of a bike tour with VulcanicaMente is like. 27.09 The morning got off to a brisk start; we cycled from Lecce to San Cesario where VulcanicaMente’s office is located. Our first assignment was to decide who should be responsible for which segment of the project. Dividing the tasks went surprisingly smoothly without much of a fight. Everyone had already figured out how they could contribute to the project. In the afternoon, everyone went to work with their task. Fellow volunteer Larisa from Romania designed some gorgeous logos for our Euro Bike Tour project. Additionally, the Italian volunteer, Salvatore, made an introduction video interviewing all the project volunteers. Meanwhile, Ernesto and Sara, our coordinators, began planning the bike tour’s route. 28.09 The second morning began with a small artistic task, namely selecting the logo from the drafts Larisa had designed for the project. They were all great but, luckily, we easily came to a consensus of which one was the best. Once again, there were no arguments. It’s clear we have formed a nice, unique group that works well together. In the meantime, Greek volunteer Dimitris started creating a promotional video for the bike tour and he needed our contribution. To help him, we needed to cycle around a beautiful big park in Lecce. 29.09 This day was a bit different; we did not cycle to the VulcanicaMente office but stayed in Lecce. There, we went to the cultural centre Manifatture Knos to pick up our bikes from the Cicloofficina Popolare Knos (CPK). While there, we participated in a bike repair workshop, hosted by CPK’s Andrea. Among many things, we learned how to replace a bike tire and how to oil the chain. The rest of the afternoon, we worked on our individual tasks and/or explored the local culture. 30.09 On this day, we continued formalizing our bike tour route, trying to decide which roads to take, where to stay overnight and for how many nights. Ernesto and Sara know this area very well and it was wonderful to learn from them. In the afternoon, Dimitris and Salvatore continued editing the videos they had already made. 1.10 This was a day in which most volunteers focused on working on their tasks. There were some general discussions, however, specifying different aspects about the bike tour. 2.10 In the afternoon, we had a lecture that consisted of two parts. The first discussed the trans-Adriatic pipeline which has caused a number of problems to the environment. The problems are so extensive, there is the possibility that it will result in court cases. The second part of the lecture focused on the xylella fastidiosa bacteria that infects olive trees and kills their tops. The lecturer was fantastic and we found it fascinating. In the evening, we had a visitor in our flat. He was responsible for printing our project logo on T-shirts. The black logo looked really great on the white shirts and everybody was happy.
